Procedure Guidelines For Visiting Cruising Yachts For Saldanha Bay

Location Latitude 33° 02’ S; Longitude 17° 58’ E.

The Port of Saldanha is officially a Port of Entry or Departure.

The TNPA has appointed Yachtport SA in the Small Craft Harbour of Saldanha to be the designated landing or departing site for the small craft and yachts, as there is suitable mooring, berthing or anchoring with protected and deep waters. It is also inside the TNPA ISP Level 1 security area.

Entry Procedures

ALL yachts, local and foreign, entering from international waters and/or a foreign port wishing to clear into South Africa must first submit a request for pre-arrival authorisation from department of transport, done online through www.osasa.org.za at least 96 hours before arrival in the port.

Saldanha Bay is located on the west coast of South Africa about 60 nautical miles north of Cape Town. Saldanha Bay is the largest natural harbour in South Africa with deep water access, good protection from swell and safe protection from all wind directions. Located about 60 nautical miles north of Cape Town, it also forms part of the seaborne entrance to the Langebaan Lagoon.

The Harbour jurisdiction area of National Ports Authority includes the area between Long Point to the north of North Head extending 3 nautical miles seaward on a bearing 244° and Vondeling Point to the south of South Head extending 3 nautical miles seaward on a bearing of 231°. Entry procedure with Port Authority: 15 minutes prior entering the Saldanha VTS zone, inform Port Control on VHF CH.12 and request permission to enter the port. When passing a reporting point, as indicated on the SAN Charts, inform Port Control via VHF accordingly.

Mooring/berthing options

Saldanha Bay Yacht Club: www.sbyc.co.za is in a sheltered area of Smitswinkelbaai, at 33’01.080 S 17’56.000 E. It usually has swing moorings available.
