Brad and I were so pleased to have another opportunity to hike the beautiful trails inside the Nature Reserve at the Saldanha Navy Base. What a privilege. We extend our thanks to Luigi and the rest of the Navy team who make these events possible. We look forward to the next one!
The weather was perfect with a clear sky and a light breeze. Although a little on the chilly side, it could be argued that these were perfect conditions for a long walk. Better than trying to hike in the blazing sun.
Before the start of the walk we took a picture of the group of SBYC members and friends who turned up to enjoy the beautiful day in nature. It was fantastic to see 39 people of all ages taking part. The group quickly split up as different people embarked on different routes but we met up with Jaco and his family as well as a few others at the lighthouse where we stopped for a quick snack and a few mandatory selfies.
Brad, myself and our friend Alison ended up doing a route that was 12.7kms and we were privileged to see some buck en route. The routes are generally quite flat and easy to walk.
This reserve remains one of my favourite for the natural beauty, spectacular coastline and the chance to get up close to the North Head lighthouse which we normally only see from the sea when sailing up the coast towards St Helena Bay.
Saturday evening at the club was a fabulous way to end a great day with Rugby and delicious hot soup made by Dorita.
Thanks to Gavin and to everyone else who organised a great day.

Flowers not that prolific this year as it might have been a bit early for them. Sadly I only sighted two springbok, but others on the longer walks reported more. Luigi has reverted on the annual permits. The navy base is not issuing these any longer as a result of numerous security breaches recently. This makes us even more grateful for grant of permission for this annual walk and our North Bay visits with RCYC.
