SA Ocean Racing Trust “Skippers Ticket” Bursaries
The South African Ocean Racing Trust is offering bursaries to promising young sailors to assist them in obtaining skipper’s tickets.
The Bursary Scheme
The South African Ocean Racing Trust wishes to invite applications for a limited number of scholarships to deserving individuals in order to assist them in obtaining SAS (South African Sailing) or RYA (Royal Yachting Association) approved Certificates of Competence (“skippers tickets”). The SAORT has allocated certain funds for this financial year for scholarships and intends to obtain the maximum number and quality of qualified individuals from this allocation.
Applications, in writing, should be addressed to The SA Ocean Racing Trust, 429 Helderberg Village, Private Bag X19, Somerset West 7129 and must be received by the 30th September 2010. Applications must include the following details:-
- Name
- Postal Address (and e-mail if available)
- Telephone number
- Date of Birth
- Details of course (name of establishment, approximate dates, description of course) and type of skipper’s ticket to be obtained.
- Details of sailing experience and qualifications to date
- The future intended use of the Certificate of Competence
- Any other background that may be pertinent.
- A letter of support from the individual’s club commodore, school principal or person of similar stature who is able to vouch for the individuals “bona fides” in applying for this scholarship
The SAORT will grant scholarships to individuals who in the Trustee’s sole opinion are best suited to benefit from the scholarship and who hold the best prospects for supporting the SAORT’s objectives of “the promotion and fostering … of ocean and off-shore racing and sailing in any part of the world …”
The SAORT is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation with the registered activity of “Sport” which is defined as “The administration, development, co-ordination or promotion of sport or recreation in which the participants take part on a non-professional basis as a pastime.” Therefore bursaries may not be granted to individuals intending to use the bursary to further a profession or career.
Successful applicants will be required to complete the course and obtain the Certificate of Competence applied for within a 12 month period of the scholarship being granted. Failure to obtain the Certificate applied for may render the applicant liable to refund the scholarship in full. Payment of the scholarship by the SAORT will only be made directly to an established and recognised sailing school or testing facility.
A number of sailing schools have indicated their intentions to make special offers available to SAORT bursary holders and applicants are therefore advised to contact the schools directly to obtain the best offers, so that the Trust’s goals of maximising the number and quality of individuals obtaining their Certificates of Competency can be achieved.

R.I.P. Louis Adendorff - Aeternum vale
It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Louis Adendorff. He passed away on Monday 4th August at 19:20, with his daughter Rose showing him photographs of her babies and telling him about all the calls she’d had from friends and family.
Although Louis was not gregarious by nature, he was seen around the Club on most days when he was at his home base, Saldanha. He could be seen tinkering under the trees, with bits for “little Emma”, reading quietly in the clubhouse, standing chatting in the car park, sitting on the stoep, but most regularly on the jetty or on the deck of a boat, answering questions and giving advice, from his stash of knowledge, to sailors. He loved Emma with a passion and it was a pleasure sharing a cup of coffee on her. His softly narrated stories about his sailing trips a mari usque ad mare , his arrival at SBYC, his diamond mining, his "Rhodesian" days and more, had people hanging on his lips.
Our condolances and best wishes go to his daughters, Rose and Rina, his sons-in-law Steve and Wim, and his grandchildren Roman, Morgan, Emma, Liam and Mark. Rose's address is rose.adendorff@ru.ac.za should you wish to contact her. Donations in lieu of wreaths may be made to the NSRI. Their details are elsewhere on this site.
Members please take note of the following: July 2009
If you arrive at the Club and cannot find your boat, do not panic - Patrick and Wynand played Hide and Seek with them this weekend. The request came from the Navy that boats in line with their slipway should be moved. These two energetic committee members managed to move 12 boats on Saturday. Yours may be one of them.
Members are reminded that fees are due in full at the end of July. Your access card will be deactivated and membership may be rescinded should you fail to pay your dues.
The committee is in the process of updating all boat owners’ records and hereby requests you to furnish us with the following information by no later than 30 October 2008:
At the same time, you are also requested to return the “Mooring Agreement” mailed to you recently – the return date of which is in actual fact the ‘30th September 2008’.
Once again, we trust that we can count on your assistance in this regard.
