Once again, a great day at SBYC following a shortened course due to fickle winds, the crews enjoyed early (very early for Windpower!) bar opening, breakfasts, burgers for lunch and our world famous steak braai with salads and garlic bread in the evening. Thanks to RCYC and all the crews some of whom left early for home and a special vote of thanks to all the SBYC members and staff who made sure that things ran as smoothly as possible!

Schaapen Island and beyond 11^th November

It was a quiet weekend at the club and it was no surprise that Sundowner Rose was the only vessel at anchor off Schaapen at 12 noon. Next Coldplay with Neil and Theresa arrived from Mykonos. Jandy arrived in haste and excitement, and communications were lost in translation between Wilhelm at anchor duty, and Elize behind the wheel. Anchor was dropped with main sail up and cruising at 3 knots – fenders were brought out by Sundowner Rose and Coldplay just in case.

More schooled was Legacy and Daniel doing the solo sailor bit, in his anchoring technique. Natasha from Mykonos rafting up to Coldplay completed the fleet. Winds were light after all the storms and cancelled events.

Departures did not go well. Legacy’s engine would not start. Daniel was assisted by Neil and was heard muttering … “I love my Lord, but why won’t this f***en engine start?”

Sundowner Rose proceeded to Oudepos and met with Kalimba already at anchor there. Frustrated by a seized windlass loud hammering reverberated through the bay as they tried to remove it.

Coldplay did a “drink-stop” at Sundowner Rose, before heading off bravely in the darkness to go anchor at Kraalbaai … at almost low tide. Jandy and Legacy also overnighted at Kraalbaai returning in a good southerly breeze on Sunday. Legacy wasn’t making good headway with what looked like only a storm jib up … and couldn’t leave the helm. Radio coms confirmed no distress. One can only image his Xmas wishes “Dear Santa, an autopilot please …”

PORT OF SALDANHA AND LANGEBAAN RISK ASSESSMENT WORKSHOP, FIRST OF ITS KIND IN SOUTH AFRICA, 11-12 OCTOBER 2023

SBYC was represented by Steve Mc Comb at a 2 day Port risk assessment workshop held by SAMSA. Craig Middleton also attended on SAS’s behalf:

Risk assessments provides a useful systematic process to identify, analyse and mitigate potential hazards and the risks associated with it.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) facilitated a 2-day structured risk assessment workshop for the Port of Saldanha and Langebaan in October 2023, with more than 25 participating organisations / institutions.  In addition to SAMSA, participants and observers, amongst others, represented the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), the South African National Parks (SANParks), the Western Cape Government, the South African Navy (SAN), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and various other national and local stakeholders.

This was the first workshop of its kind to be held in South Africa and addresses South Africa’s international risk obligations, using an international tool, which had been adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to assess the risks in the approach to, and within the Port of Saldanha and the Langebaan Lagoon as part of the decision-making process to improve the safety of the waterways and related infrastructure.

The Summer season is in full swing, we have had two very successful racing events at SBYC this month, the West Coast Offshore Race on the 17^th and 18^th and the Carol Middleton Memorial Race on the 25^th, both events attracted over 100 people to the club for the dinners, we served 130 steak meals at the West Coast Offshore Race and Albie Carstens’ team from Cartol served over 100 Spit braai meals on Saturday evening!  The “Carol Middleton Memorial Race” had 23 entries of which 18 started, JML 2, our development girls team made a good decision to return to the club, when the wind and sea conditions became a bit more than what they were comfortable with, great job ladies, you’ll definitely do it next time!

One of the greatest feelings is to receive such positive feedback from everyone who took part in these events, on how well organised everything is and how smoothly the events went, thank you to everyone who gave up their time to assist with these events and make them such a huge success.

We are hosting the 505 and 29er Nationals, which are being held the 23 – 25 September 2023 out of Club Mykonos. There is a request for a bridge boat, so if anyone is interested in assisting, please let Eddie know. Thanks in advance!

OSASA is aware of a number of races and rallies entering South Africa later this year which will place huge pressure on berthing facilities in October/November/December especially in Richards Bay and Cape Town. OSASA is in contact with the organisers of these events.

October 2023

• Global Solo Challenge – 19 boats leaving Spain 26 August, probably rounding the Cape within 6 weeks? Whilst this is a non-stop round-the-world race, some will stop for repairs etc.
• Ocean Globe Race – 14 boats due Cape Town as port of entry 10-20 October, departing Cape Town 5 November 2023

November

• Clipper Race – 11 boats due into Cape Town as port of entry 6-10 November, departing Cape Town 16th November 2023. Anything between 8 and 18 crew aboard each boat.
• World Arc – 26 boats listed due November 2023 into Richards Bay as port of entry, will coastal sail individually, leaving Cape Town by 6th January 2024

December

• Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey – 16 large boats, arriving Richards Bay as port of entry 10-30 November. Will coastal sail individually, leaving Cape Town 10th Jan 2024

In addition to this we are expecting at least 80 individual circumnavigating boats coming into Richards Bay as Port of Entry from the Indian Ocean starting from September, building up through October and peaking in November. These boats will then mainly progress coastwise to Cape Town for December/Christmas.

A momentous occasion as Sea Glory makes her way back to the water after an extended rest ashore…!!!!
